10 Space Facts To Cure Your Insomnia

Manharleen Kaur

Space is a vast and mysterious frontier. These facts, one after the other, will have you hooked more and deeper in this adventure our universe truly is

1. The Universe is Expanding

The universe has been expanding since the Big Bang, which occurred approximately 13.8 billion years ago. Galaxies are moving away from each other, and the farther they are, the faster they seem to be moving away.

2. There Are More Stars Than Grains of Sand

Astronomers estimate that there are about 100 billion galaxies in the observable universe, each containing millions or even billions of stars. This means there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on all the Earth’s beaches combined!

3. A Day on Venus is Longer Than a Year

Venus has a very slow rotation on its axis, taking about 243 Earth days to complete one rotation. However, it only takes about 225 Earth days to orbit the Sun, making a day on Venus longer than a year!

4. Neutron Stars Are Incredibly Dense

A neutron star is the remnant core of a massive star that has exploded in a supernova. These stars are so dense that a sugar-cube-sized amount of neutron-star material would weigh about as much as all of humanity combined!

5. Black Holes Can Grow Supermassive

Supermassive black holes, found at the centers of galaxies, can have masses equivalent to millions or even billions of suns. Their formation is still a topic of research, but they likely grow by merging with other black holes and consuming surrounding matter.

6. The Coldest Place in the Universe

The coldest natural place in the universe is the Boomerang Nebula, where temperatures drop to about -458 degrees Fahrenheit (-272 degrees Celsius), just a degree above absolute zero!

7. Light Takes Time to Travel

Light from the Sun takes about 8 minutes and 20 seconds to reach Earth. This means when you look at the Sun, you’re actually seeing it as it was over 8 minutes ago!

8. There’s a Giant Water Reservoir in Space

Astronomers have discovered a massive cloud of water vapor around a black hole 12 billion light-years away, containing 140 trillion times the water of all Earth’s oceans combined!

9. The Largest Volcano in the Solar System

Olympus Mons on Mars is the largest volcano in the solar system, standing at about 13.6 miles (22 kilometers) high—nearly three times the height of Mount Everest!

10. Space is Completely Silent

Unlike on Earth, where sound travels through air, space is a vacuum with no medium for sound to travel through. This means that in space, no one can hear you scream!

These ten facts barely scratch the surface of the wonders of space. As we continue to explore the cosmos, we uncover more about our universe and our place within it. Keep looking up—there’s so much more to discover!
